Composer Angelo Gilardino was born in 1941 and enjoyed a long career as a concert guitarist from 1958-81. In addition to composing, he premiered hundreds of new works for the guitar. To date, he has written several concertos for his instrument, and many chamber works and sonatas, all with one or multiple guitars. His drive to compose came from the composer Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who said that composition would be better for him, he would discover more about himself, than from a life of concerts and recitals and editing works by other composers. The 60 studies for solo guitar show the rich range of musical, literary and spiritual influences on Gilardino: Lorca, Rimbaud, Bartók, Ravel, Berg, Gerhard, Villa-Lobos, Prokofiev and Albéniz to name a few. An important addition to the catalog of guitar music on disc, this recording will be eagerly awaited by students and guitar enthusiasts.
