There is a certain pleasant feeling in hearing two seminal 16th-century voices on a Renaissance organ with authentic single-tone temperament, especially one as poetically clear as Graziadio Antegnati's only manual heard here. Luca Scandali has the measure of Pellegrini's austere songs, his occasional borrowings from Clemens Non Papa, Janequin and others matched by his own striking originality. Padovano's characteristic toccatas and ricercares are exalted in the contrapuntal richness of the Venetian school at its peak. Scandali's informative note complements a performance of total intuitive understanding, captured in the propitious acoustics of the Basilica of Saint Barbara in Mantua.
