The Alcántaras are a middle-class family who reside in the Madrid neighborhood of San Genaro. The family members are: the father, Antonio; the mother, Mercedes; Inés, Toni and Carlitos, the children; and Mercedes' mother, Herminia. Other characters, family, friends, neighbors and acquaintances swarm around them. The family's experiences are part of the historical events that took place at the time, constantly reflected in the series, either through their appearance in the media or through the direct involvement of the family members in them. This is reinforced, on many occasions, by digitally inserting the actors into real recordings of the time. The family's vicissitudes are narrated by Carlitos, from an indefinite present time and as an adult, who thus becomes the de facto protagonist of the series.
