Although the lute enjoyed great popularity in Bach's time, the great Leipzig Singer composed only a few works for this instrument, specifically four suites and three pieces in other genres. Despite their numerical scarcity, these works explore all the technical and expressive resources of the lute, to the point of being considered among the most important works in the literature of this instrument. For this new recording, the Italian lutist Mario D'Agosto uses a thirteen-string baroque instrument and its elegant ornaments best reflect the refined art of ornamentation that flourished in the last stage of the baroque period. The booklet contains cover notes about the composer and the works performed, as well as the performer's biography.
