Here's a new organ performance worthy of tradition, recorded in 2011 on the mighty EM Skinner organ at the Cincinnati Museum Center in Union Terminal (Ohio, USA). The organ is maintained to an excellent standard by its curator, Harley V. Piltingsrud, and putting the instrument to the test with a selection that maintains the venerable tradition of organ arrangements is JeanBaptiste Robin (1976), one of the world's leading organists and composers. Frenchmen of his generation who studied with MarieClaire Alain and Olivier Latry. Robin has made his own arrangements of music ranging from Samuel Barber's elegiac Adagio to the powerful Prelude in C sharp minor Op. 3, No.2 that made Rachmaninov famous, to the lush Prélude à l'aprèsmidi d'un Debussy's faune and the monumental La cathédrale engloutie. There is Inc space between the enormous color range of the Cincinatti organs for the Romanian folk dances of Bartók and Mahler's Urlicht, which became the turning point of his powerful Symphony of the Resurrection. Concluding the recital are two original organ works, Liszt's contrapuntal tribute to Bach and Robin 's own Distant Circles. Opinion We are dealing with the truly extraordinary... Robin plays with boldness, verve and with unwavering attention to chromatic detail. The result is a triumph. --Choir & Organ Magazine July / August 2015
