Edvard Grieg was undoubtedly an avant-garde composer when it came to the flowering of creativity that took place in Scandinavian culture between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. His imagination was particularly stimulated by popular music and stories from his homeland, Norway. The play Peer Gynt is a brilliant example: it is stage music composed for Ibsen's lyric opera, based on the popular Norwegian compilation of Per Gynt.
