Haydn composed his 'Stabat Mater' in 1767, one of his first powerful vocal works. Haydn had accumulated much experience with religious and meditative music in Eisenstadt, and his deeply felt and well thought out 'Stabat Mater' was a great success. Scores of Haydn's work from that era are found in libraries and orchestra archives throughout Europa . At the legendary 'Concerts Spirituels' in Paris during the French Revolution, the piece was regularly performed as an anthem of the new spirit of the age. As one of the leading composers of 'Sturm und Drang', Haydn used dramatic and risky harmonies as well as a strong chromatic motivation to increase tension. The work is notable in every way for that time. Feelings like pain and fear are expressed directly in a sound language that is not only beautiful, but also terrifying.
