Liszt's solitary Piano Sonata (1851-53) can be seen as the pinnacle of Romantic piano literature. Liszt developed the art of the Beethoven sonata in a new form, combined the result with Schubert's 'Wanderer' Fantasia and created a masterpiece from several parts, which is performed without pause. The leitmotifs run through the piece like magical signs on a fantastic piano journey. Petrarch's Sonnets of 1838 were originally for singing and piano, but as 'songs without words' they became famous as poetic instrumental pieces. In 1863 Liszt composed two legends, both dedicated to his daughter Cosima. Originally conceived for orchestra, these pieces also became famous in their piano version.

Liszts einzelgängerische Sonate für Klavier (1851-53) kann als Gipfel der romantischen Klavierliteratur angesehen werden.
