The action takes place in Texas at the end of the 19th century. After a frustrated and comical robbery on a train, Bickford Waner (Dennis Hopper), who is nicknamed Kid Blue, decides to straighten out his life and settles in a town called Dime Box, where he performs various small-time jobs without luck - waiter in a barber, chicken plucker, ceramic factory worker - always under the strict surveillance of Sheriff "Mean John" Simpson (Ben Johnson), who does not trust him.
