The action takes place in Texas at the end of the 19th century. After a frustrated and comical robbery on a train, Bickford Waner (Dennis Hopper), who is nicknamed Kid Blue, decides to straighten out his life and settles in a town called Dime Box, where he performs various small-time jobs without luck - waiter in a barber, chicken plucker, ceramic factory worker - always under the strict surveillance of Sheriff "Mean John" Simpson (Ben Johnson), who does not trust him. At the boarding house where he stays he makes friends with Reese Ford (Warren Oates) and his wife Molly (Lee Purcell) – who soon seduces him – and he also meets Bob (Peter Boyle), a quirky preacher who is building an “aerocycle.” ” in the middle of the desert.
