Johnny Drake, a young sailor recently landed, gets a job on the Santa Monica Pier. There he will meet and fall in love with Mora, a mysterious woman who tells him that she was rescued from a desert island by the captain of a ship and that she now works pretending to be a mermaid in an amusement park show. When Johnny discovers that Mora's former boyfriends died under strange circumstances, he will begin to suspect that perhaps his lover is actually a mermaid who carries out atrocious murders on full moon nights. Night Tide (Night Tide, 1961) was the first feature film directed by the disparate talent of the fantastic Curtis Harrington, a brilliant Californian filmmaker and precursor of New Queer Cinema, who until then had stood out as a critic and director of some experimental shorts that They had gained some recognition. A personal friend of underground filmmaker Kenneth Anger and director James Whale, Harrington will take from the latter the subtle mix of lyricism and terror that permeates every frame of this dark and poetic tale.
