Grace Stewart (Nicole Kidman), a fervent Catholic, decides to move to a mysterious mansion with her two children, Anne (Alakina Mann) and Nicholas (James Bentley), waiting for her husband's return. The children suffer from a strange illness that prevents them from leading a normal life. They suffer from photophobia and cannot see sunlight, so their lives are governed by very strict rules imposed to protect them as much as possible. They live in darkness, by candlelight, with doors and windows closed. One day, Grace decides to hire three new servants, a nanny, a gardener and a young mute girl, and strange phenomena begin to occur that disturb the family. He suspects that they are not alone and his children develop strange behavior. His skepticism will change and he will try to figure out what is happening and who the others are.
