A New York criminal, Nick Bianco (Victor Mature) is injured and arrested during a robbery at a jewelry store. At the trial, prosecutor Louis D'Angelo (Brian Donlevy) offers to reduce his sentence if he gives up the names of his cronies, but Nick refuses. After three years in prison, Nick learns that his wife has committed suicide and his two daughters are in an orphanage. He then decides to negotiate with prosecutor D'Angelo and hand over the names of his accomplices. However, the prosecutor demands that he also collaborate in the capture of Tommy Udo (Richard Widmark), a murderer and psychopath, which he accepts. Nick is freed and manages to rebuild his life with a new wife and daughters. But Tommy Udo is freed, and Nick understands that he will seek him out to take revenge.
