Tired of conventions and ties, Murray Burns, iconoclastic writer, leaves his job as a scriptwriter for a children's program and takes refuge in his apartment where he lives with his nine-year-old nephew Nick. It's been seven since his sister left and left the child with him. With no job or benefit, social services decide to take care of Nick and a couple of social workers, Sandra and Albert, show up at Murray's house. A special relationship arises between him and Sandra. Albert, a strict professional, advises his partner to drop the case and continues with the efforts to find another home for the child.
