In 1905, the sailors of the battleship Prince Potemkin mutiny when they are to be executed for refusing to eat rotten meat, and take command of the ship. In the town of Odessa, the inhabitants celebrate the arrival of the battleship in support of the mutineers, but the Tsar's troops decimate them on the steps in front of the city's port.
From the high seas, cannons fire at the soldiers, and the sailors prepare for a battle against the official fleet.
The revolutionary movement that culminated in the creation of the Soviet Union is considered the greatest social experiment in modern history. In a few years, the ossified political structures of tsarism disintegrated to give way to a system without social classes, a product of modernist ideas originating in the 19th century.
