Major Jock Sinclair (Alec Guinness) has spent much of his life in a Scottish regiment. He started as a young piper and during World War II he rose through the ranks to become Commander in Chief. After the war, having returned to Scotland, he spent his days commanding his regiment in the barracks among bagpipes, whiskey and typical Scottish melodies. But a new Commander-in-Chief has been appointed and is about to arrive, Basil Barrow (John Mills), and it doesn't seem like he and Jock are going to have much in common. Directed by Ronald Neame and starring Alec Guinness and John Mills, Whiskey and Glory was nominated for an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay in 1961.
