Venice, 1866. Livia Serpieri (Alida Valli) is a beautiful countess of the Italian aristocracy who meets Franz Mahler (Farley Granger), an Austrian army officer, in the middle of the Italian war of independence against Austria. When she meets Mahler, she first feels a strong rejection towards him, but after a night together walking through the streets of Venice, she falls deeply in love with the Austrian Lieutenant, becoming his lover. Later you will discover that Mahler, far from being a romantic hero, turns out to be a lifer with few scruples...Beautiful melodrama about human passions such as love, deception and revenge in the restless Italy of the "Risorgimento", on the eve of the unification of the country. The script is based on a short story by Camillo Boito, the librettist of Giuseppe Verdi, adapted by Visconti together with his collaborator Suso Cecchi D'Amico and with the participation of Tennesse Williams and Paul Bowles.
