A writer (McGregor) reluctantly accepts the assignment to finish the memoirs of British Prime Minister Lang (Pierce Brosnan), after the death of the person who was doing it. To do this, he settles on an island on the east coast of the United States. The day after his arrival, a former minister accuses Lang of authorizing the illegal capture of suspected terrorists and their delivery to the CIA, acts that would constitute a war crime. The scandal draws journalists and protesters to the mansion where Lang, his wife (Olivia Williams) and his personal assistant are staying.
