In Italian lyrical opera of the 18th century, the aria for solo voice was perhaps the only vehicle to express the feelings and emotions of the characters. And the presentation of different expressive situations is undoubtedly one of the distinctive characteristics of Italian opera. Unlike its French counterpart, Italian opera showed little interest in any kind of realistic representation of the plot. Instead, it focused on music or, more specifically, it focused on the ability of the human voice to evoke emotions, of which love was naturally one of the most used.
