The recordings were made between March 18 and 21, 1996. Bach composed his St. Matthew Passion in 1727. Only two of his five adaptations have survived: St. Matthew and St. John. The work premiered in Leipzig, where Bach was Kapellmeister at the Thomaskirche. Revised many times by the composer, the St. Matthew Passion was performed frequently during his lifetime, but was not heard outside Leipzig until 1829, when Mendelssohn performed it in a modified version in Berlin. King's College Cambridge Choir, Brandenburg Consort.
