These 6 works comprise Bach's entire output of German motets, in stark contrast to his prolific output of cantatas, over 200 works. German motets occupy a specific place in the canon of liturgical music from the 16th century to the 18th century. They were only performed in choir schools during services in which the congregation remained silent. Therefore, its structure is more complex than that found in works in which the congregation participates in singing. Bach's works date from the time when he was cantor at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where one of his tasks was to provide music for minor ceremonies.
