Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924) began his musical career in the province before becoming organist of the famous Madeleine church in Paris. Later, he was also a determining figure as a pedagogue: as a composition teacher, he followed the composer Jules Massenet at the renowned Paris Conservatory. His most important work is Pelléas et Mélisande. However, the Pavane, the Elegy and its songs, such as Après un rêve, are famous. The Requiem was composed by Fauré in 1887. It is his only larger work with a religious text. Fauré draws death in his music with soft colors, letting the afterlife sound like an early impressionistic paradise on a hard candy. Lucia Popp was a Slovak-Romanian soprano who was especially sought after as a performer of Mozart's operas and Mahler's songs. Sir Colin Davis is an old school English director. From 1983 to 1992 he conducted the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and since 1991 he has been honorary conductor of the Saxon State Orchestra in Dresden.
