The great Hungarian pianist Géza Anda (1921-76) was born in Budapest and studied with the legendary pedagogue Dohnányi, who was a student of Brahms. Anda died young at 55 years old. Furtwängler called Anda the 'piano troubadour', and he was indeed a prophet of the singing piano. Anda was the first pianist to record all of Mozart's concertos, and he had a great heroic sound that allowed him to express different moods in music with many subtleties on the piano. He was especially attracted to two composers: Schumann and Bartók. Schumann's feared 'Symphonic Studies' can be heard in two recordings: one as a young man and another twenty years later at the zenith of his artistic maturity. His unrivaled mastery of interpreting Beethoven and Schubert, whose last sonata he plays here as a challenge to the piece's creator, speaks for itself in a timeless way.
