ROSSINI: Sonate a Quattro for Winds [CD de audio] Rotterdam Philh., H.d.Graaf (Wind) and Rossini

Rossini wrote these six sonatas for strings, two violins, cello and double bass at the young age of twelve. He later questioned the works, even after having transcribed them for string quartet (in this form the works have become popular and have gained a permanent place in the CD catalogue). But they show in their form, which is more than embryonic, their talent for a virtuoso writing style and their infallible ear for good sound. No less than this do Mendelssohn's string symphonies, which he wrote at a similar age, show. Both composers display above-average skill and inventiveness that even Mozart did not have at that age. Now these sonatas have received a color of sound: transcribed for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon, played by the first wind players of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.
