Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart), an elderly senator in the United States Congress, explains to a reporter why he has traveled with his wife (Vera Miles) to attend the funeral of his old friend Tom Doniphon (John Wayne). The story begins many years earlier, when Ransom was a young lawyer from the East who was traveling by stagecoach to Shinbone, a small town in the West, to practice law and lay down the law. Shortly before arriving, he was robbed and brutally beaten by Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin), a feared gunman.
