June 1945. Nelly, a survivor of Auschwitz, returns to her native Berlin seriously injured, with her face disfigured, accompanied by Lene, from the Jewish Agency and her friend before the war. Shortly after undergoing a traumatic facial reconstruction operation and despite her friend's warnings, Nelly insists on searching for her husband Johnny. Nelly's entire family has died in the Holocaust and Johnny is convinced that his wife did not survive either. Nelly manages to find him, but Johnny doesn't recognize her. He only sees a woman who reminds him of his wife. Nelly wants to find out at all costs if Johnny really loved her and if he betrayed her, so she agrees to pretend to be herself.
