This silent film classic was the first film to exploit camera movement. It tells how the doorman of a luxurious hotel, an old man proud of his work and respected by everyone, is abruptly demoted to a toilet waiter. Deprived of his old job and the uniform that identifies him, he tries to hide his new condition, but his life slowly disintegrates.
Synopsis
In The Last FW Murnau not only put cinema in "motion", he also experimented to the fullest with the possibilities of the camera in order to reduce labels or intertitles to a minimum. Murnau had the camera go up the elevators, walk down the hallways, cross the door thresholds and follow the protagonist, Emil Jannings, through the streets conveying his pride in working as a uniformed hotel doorman; pride that that same chamber transforms into shame and humiliation when he is relegated to being in charge of the toilets.
