One afternoon, Fanette (Deneuve) meets Bernard (Le Coq), a former classmate, and in the conversation, Philippe, Fanette's first love, is mentioned. Her memory takes her once again to the movie theater where they are showing "An affair to remember": Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr meet again at the top of the Empire State Building. Fanette is writing a book about the painter François Arnal and has to go to New York to photograph two of his paintings.
