Will (Gary Grimes), Les (Ron Howard) and Tod (Charles Martin Smith) are three young farmers who find the outlaw Harry Spikes (Lee Marvin) badly injured in the bushes. Without hesitation the three boys will save Spikes' life and give him shelter while he recovers. When Spikes is fully recovered, Will will give him his horse to continue on his way. But after the disappearance of his horse, Will's father will subject his son to one last beating, after which Will will decide to leave the farm and make his way towards the unknown, wild west.
