Due to a misunderstanding, Matt Dow (James Cagney), a man who has just been released from prison after serving a six-year sentence for a crime he did not commit, is mistaken for a train robber. In the skirmish with the police, Davey Bishop (John Derek), a boy who is almost a son to him, is seriously injured. With the misunderstanding cleared up, Matt takes Davey to Mr. Swenson's farm to recover from his injuries. Meanwhile, Matt falls in love with the farmer's daughter (Viveca Lindfors).
