ECCENTRICITIES OF A NIGHTINGALE: Immediately after the triumphant A Streetcar Named Desire, TENNESSEE WILLIAMS premiered Summer and Smoke in 1948, a work that underwent a couple of revisions, the last of which, dated 1964, was titled ECCENTRICITIES OF A NIGHTINGALE. The premiere, however, did not take place until 1972 and four years later the present filming was made by the specialist GLENN JORDAN (Grey Uniform), also responsible for a version of A Streetcar..., starring Jessica Lange. The character of Alma, the woman who sees maturity approaching and wants to experience love, at least once in her life, is played by BLYTHE DANNER, extraordinary actress and singer Her Parents, Will & Grace, Things I Forgot to Remember, Mother of Gwyneth Paltrow. Due to its artistic direction and sets, this production was a finalist for the Emmy Award.
TEN BLOCKS ON THE CAMINO REAL: Unlike the previous case, TEN BLOCKS ON THE CAMINO REAL was initially a one-act play written in 1948 that TENNESSEE WILLIAMS later developed into Camino Real (1953). This very personal adaptation of Dante's Inferno is set in an imaginary town with Mexican resonances where a tired Casanova, Margarita Gautier, Esmeralda the Zingara and Don Quixote himself meet. The cast lives up to the surreal atmosphere of the play: a very young MARTIN SHEEN who had just been nominated for a Tony Award for A Tale of Three Strangers; the unorthodox ALBERT DEKKER famous for his role in Dr. Cyclops ; JANET MARGOLIN, one of Woody Allen's favorite actresses; and the legendary LOTTE LENYA, widow of Kurt Weill, who had already participated in another film based on Williams, Mrs. Stone's Roman Spring.
