Willowdean Dickson (Danielle Macdonald) is an overweight but confident Texan teenager. Her mother Rosie (Jennifer Aniston), a former beauty queen who derogatorily nicknames her daughter Dumplin', is the organizer of the new Miss Teen Bluebonnet beauty pageant that she herself won years ago. Willowdean starts working at a fast food restaurant and there she meets Bo, an athlete to whom she feels attracted and with whom she gets along very well. But when he begins to show doubts, she sets out to regain her self-esteem and earn her mother's respect by entering the beauty pageant as a form of protest against the system. What she doesn't imagine is that her brave decision will lead other young women who are far from beauty stereotypes to support her cause.
