Tatiana Mills, a 16-year-old American student, writes, as class work, a letter to Anton Vincent, a notorious dictator of a Caribbean island nation. After centuries of oppression, the island's inhabitants finally rebel against the dictatorship and Anton is overthrown by his own people. The former dictator is forced to flee to EE.UU. and finds an unexpected refuge in the garage of Tatiana's house. There a father-son relationship is established with Tatiana and her single mother, Darlene. With no prospect of being able to return to his country, Antón makes use of all his years of dictatorial experience to instruct Tatiana how to behave with her abusive classmates, how to get revenge on them and how to become the most popular in the school.
