Glen Hansard is a singer and songwriter who plays on the streets of Dublin, when not working in his father's shop. During the day, to earn money, he performs well-known songs for passersby, but at night, he plays his own songs in which he talks about how his girlfriend left him. His talent attracts Marketa Irglova, a Czech immigrant who sells flowers on the street to support her daughter. She also recovers from a love failure and, to overcome it, writes songs about it, although she never performs them in public. Glen and Marketa suddenly end up doing a duet in a music store and that's when they discover that something unites them. Having not recovered from their breakups, they hesitate to fight to start a relationship with each other. While they make a decision that changes their lives, they both focus on writing new songs and recording something, to try to make their way in music.
