Hundreds of French people, including little Paulette and her parents, head on a desperate journey to the south of France. Nazi planes fly over this crowd, mercilessly bombing the road. Paulette's parents and their dog are killed during the attack. Someone throws the animal's carcass into the river and the girl, unable to separate herself from her dog, decides to follow him, which leads to her meeting with Michel, an eleven-year-old boy, the son of some farmers who live in the area. Michell takes her frightened friend home, where she is welcomed by the Dollé family. An older brother of Michel, Georges, suffered an accident that same day, receiving a brutal kick from a runaway horse. Also that day, the Dollé family has a new and bitter fight with their neighbors, the Gouards. When Paulette learns that the victims of the bombing are going to be buried in a mass grave, she asks her friend if this is done so that they do not get wet or cold, and is once again overcome with concern for her dog. The next day the children bury the animal in a deserted mill, and Michel comes up with the idea of building a secret cemetery there full of crosses and flowers.
