Tired of working on the construction of atomic bombs and alarmed at the destructive scope of his discovery, an American scientist of international prestige flees his country and takes refuge in the anonymity of a peaceful town on the Mediterranean coast called Calabuch.
Without intending it, the scientist, who is taken for an undocumented vagabond and renamed Jorge, becomes fully integrated into the life of the town and makes friends with its peculiar inhabitants, whom he helps solve their problems. When the patron saint festivities arrive, Jorge Hamilton ends up doing what he does best: building rockets. Calabuch hopes to overwhelm the neighboring towns with his fireworks, but those rockets are what alert the international authorities and the US Sixth Fleet mobilizes to Calabuch for his 'rescue'.
