When his father, Hank Deerfield (Tommy Lee Jones), a retired military police officer, and his wife Joan (Susan Sarandon) receive the phone call telling them the disturbing news, Hank sets out in search of his son. Emily Sanders (Charlize The ), police inspector from the area where Mike was seen, is in charge of the case. Evidence is increasing in the case that increasingly appears to be a crime and not a disappearance. It won't take long for Sanders to find herself confronting the military's top brass. The case must be forgotten but Hank won't allow it.
