Cuando Toru Watanabe (Kenichi Matsuyama) escucha casualmente el Norwegian Wood de Los Beatles, la melancolía y la nostalgia le hacen retroceder a su pasado como estudiante en el Tokio de finales de los 60. Toru recuerda a la inestable y misteriosa Naoko (Rinko Kikuchi), la novia de su mejor amigo de la adolescencia, y el suicidio de éste, suceso que le distanció de Naoko durante un año hasta que se reencuentran en la universidad. Allí inician entonces una relación íntima que, sin embargo, se resiente por la frágil salud mental de Naoko a la que internan en un centro. Al poco tiempo, Toru se enamora de Midori (Kiko Mizuhara), una joven activa y resuelta. Indeciso, sumido en dudas y temores, experimenta entonces el deslumbramiento y el desengaño allá donde todo parece cobrar sentido: el sexo, el amor y la muerte.
