The planet is invaded for the first time in history. Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a dock unloader, divorced and not a model father. Shortly after his ex-wife and her new husband leave after dropping off Robbie, their teenage son, and their young daughter Rachel for one of their rare visits, a tremendous and unexpected thunderstorm breaks out. A few moments later, at an intersection near the house, Ray witnesses an event that will change his life and the lives of his loved ones forever. A huge three-legged machine emerges from the ground and before anyone can do anything, it devastates everything within its reach.
