This volume is the second in the collection that plans to collect and reclaim a large part of the film work of filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet, key figures of cinematic modernity. Few filmmakers have worked, not without difficulties, with the most absolute creative freedom, giving rise to one of the most irredeemable and influential filmographies of European cinema. Straub and Huillet conceive cinema as an act of aesthetic and political resistance. His work is a radical work of rewriting other works; reading/rewriting of plays, operas, texts in verse or prose, based on a systematic purification of the primary elements of cinema—image, sound, words, music, gestures. In their rereadings of Hölderlin, Mallarmé, Kafka, Heinrich Böll and Pavese, Straub/Huillet build an unparalleled work whose influences – claimed by the filmmakers themselves – are as diverse as John Ford, Griffith, Bresson or the painter Paul Cézanne.

This second volume presents the adaptations that the filmmakers made of texts by the Italian writers Cesare Pavese, Elio Vittorini and Franco Fortini.
