The name vampires was given to dead and buried men who, after many years, or at least after many days, returned in body and soul, spoke, walked, infested towns, mistreated men and animals and, above all, , they sucked the blood of their neighbors, exhausted them and killed them. It was not possible to get rid of their dangerous visitors and infections unless they were exhumed, impaled, decapitated, their hearts torn out or burned. Those who died sucking generally became vampires themselves. The public newspapers of France and Holland spoke in 1693 and 1964 of vampires that were seen in Poland, and especially in Russia. Vampires appeared after noon and until midnight, sucking the blood of living men and animals so eagerly that the blood often came out of their mouths, through their noses, and through their ears, and sometimes, what is even more difficult, their corpses were swimming in the blood at the bottom of their coffins. It was said that these vampires, as they continually had a large appetite, also ate the clothes found around them. It is added that, leaving their graves, they went at night to violently hug their relatives or friends and that they sucked blood by squeezing their throats to prevent them from screaming.
