In the distant future, humanity inhabits gigantic mobile fortresses, the plantations, where civilization has flourished over the devastated land. Within them are the pilot quarters known as Misteltein or “bird cages” in which children live without knowing anything about the outside world. Their enemy are the mysterious giant organisms called Klaxosaurs. To confront them, the children pilot the giant robots known as the Franxx in the belief that this is their only purpose in life. Among them is the code number 016. Hiro, who was once considered a child prodigy and is now treated as a failure.
