John (Robert Sean Leonard), a beginning film director, visits the city of Lansing, Michigan, to present his film at the local film festival. Vince (Ethan Hawke), his best friend from high school, also stops by to support him on his big day, or so it seems. John heads to Vince's hotel where, after a warm welcome and much dialectical play, a growing tension begins to take over until Vince accuses his friend of raping his girlfriend (Uma Thurman) on graduation night.
