Midge Kelly and her brother are heading to California. On the road, they are picked up by boxer Johnny Dunne who encourages Midge to participate in a boxing evening, in which she receives a serious beating. However, manager Tommy Haley, who senses she has talent, makes her an offer, but Midge rejects it. The two brothers find work in a cafe run by Lew Bryce and his daughter Emma. When Midge and the girl become lovers, her father forces them to get married. After the wedding, Midge turns to Haley and becomes a decent, albeit excessively violent, boxer. Finally, he decides to abandon his manager and starts fighting for some gangsters.
