Gregory La Cava was one of the great comedy directors of the 1930s, although his films exuded a bitterness that was no stranger to the Great Depression era on which he based a large part of his stories such as The Melody of Life or Bed of roses, a classic of pre-code cinema. With Ginger Rogers as her muse, she knew how to bring out that enormous actress that she had inside her in titles like Ladies of the Theater, The Girl on Fifth Avenue or the strangely sordid A New Spring, a film that inexplicably passed the censorship of its time.
