This new recording (recorded in 2012) brings together two great cello sonatas from 20th century Russia: Rachmaninoff's beautiful and deeply romantic Cello Sonata, of almost symphonic proportions, and Prokofiev's Cello Sonata, a hybrid piece of his last era, a fascinating mix of the romantic, the grotesque and the introspective of this multifaceted composer. As intermissions we heard arrangements of Tchaikovsky's ballet music from La Bella Durmiente , and Glazunov's Spanish Serenade, a brilliant variety number. Beautiful, expressive and Slavic performances by the Russian cellist Alexander Russakovsky. Contains program notes on the performer's works and biographies.
