TELEMANN: Ino Cantata Dramatica [CD de audio] Musica Antiqua Köln, Goebel and Telemann

The dramatic cantata 'Ino' by Georg Philipp Telemann shows the prophetic language of the composer who performed for many years in Hamburg, who like few others, consciously made the leap from Baroque to Classical, to the thought and life of the Enlightenment. The author of the text, Carl Wilhelm Ramler, was a poet and professor in Berlin and had met Telemann years before. Ramler wrote his odes in a classicist style, but he put the ideas of humanism and naturalism into a modern perspective of his time. This may have strongly inspired Telemann to tone the secular text of 'Ino' into a cantata. German contrapuntal, Italian melodic language and French orchestration make Telemann fuse here at the top of his own musical language as his unmistakable personal style on the threshold of Classical. Telemann's 1,750 church cantatas represent almost half of his legacy. In addition, he wrote 16 masses, 23 psalms, more than 40 passions, six oratorios, as well as motets and other sacred works. His later secular compositions show great drama and new forms of harmony, headed by the cantata 'Ino' (1765).
