When Robert Kearns (Greg Kinnear) learns that all cars come equipped with a cleaning system that he invented and patented, but failed to sell, he files a lawsuit against the automobile industry for misappropriation. The Kearns are the typical American family of the sixties who live the American dream in their own way: Bob, a university professor, married Phyllis (Lauren Graham) and they had six children before turning forty. With Bob's invention, the Kearns believed they could improve their financial situation, but their hopes were dashed. When Bob waged a long legal battle against automobile magnates and began receiving threats, he became a man determined to prove that it was fair that his life's work be recognized by those who benefit from it.
