Irene (Garbo) is a young woman unhappily married to an older businessman. Of course, she is in love with a young lawyer, André (Nagel), with whom she has an adulterous affair. Both Irene and her lover know that if her husband finds out about the affair the consequences would be terrifying, so they decide to stop seeing each other.
