The Shelby family, owners of numerous plantations in Kentucky, find themselves in debt when Mr. Shelby loses a large amount of money on his investments. One of those affected by the family's defaults, Mr. Haley, goes to demand his money but, seeing that they will not be able to pay him, he offers to take ten black slaves from his plantations in exchange for the cancellation of the debt.
